On June 1st of 2023, Louis Ravené, the man who had Reichsburg castle rebuilt in the late eighteen hundreds, would have turned 200. Therefore, we will give an open air classical concert in his honor in our “Roses courtyard” on June 4th.
Louis Frederic Jacob Ravené (born on June 1st 1823 in Stettin, deceased on May 28th 1879 in Marienbad) was a steel and iron merchant as well as a patron of the Arts from Berlin. Descendant of an Huguenot family from Metz, he took over his father’s ironmongery while having a taste for the Arts in his private life.
He married Therese Elisabeth Emelie von Kusserow in 1864, who bore him three children before falling in love with a house guest called Gustav Simon. She was separated from her husband in 1874. Although he wanted to save their marriage, he did not succeed in that. He died in the Czech spa resort in 1879. Not so many years after Ravené’s death, renowned German writer Theodore Fontane wrote a novel called “L’Adultera”. He based the novel’s character van der Straaten on Mr. Ravené. In 1854 Ravené received the 4th class red eagle medal. The title of councillor of commerce was bestowed on him in 1862. He was an honorary citizen of the towns Ilmenau and Cochem. An imported palm from the Comoro Island Johanna was named after him in 1879 as palm Ravenea Hildebrandti.
It was in 1868 that Ravené bought the ruin of Reichsburg castle from the state of Prussia. In June 1868, reconstruction works began under the direction of Professor and royal building officer Hermann Ende. The second part of the reconstruction was started under the direction of building officer Julius Carl Raschdorff. Unfortunately, Ravené didn’t live to witness the completion of the interior which was later on conducted by his son Louis Auguste, who would marry arichtect Ende’s daughter. Reichsburg castle served the Ravené family as their summer residence until 1942.
The orchestra Sinfonietta Koblenz under the musical direction of Sedat Sen has been a regular guest at the annual New Year's Concert at Cochem’s cultural centre and music venue “Kapuzinerkloster”. Ever since the orchestra was founded in 1999, it has been attracting the attention of music lovers with its sophisticated musical repertoire, combining musical styles from many different eras. The musical lead lies in the hands of Sedat Sen, longstanding concert master of “Rheinische Philharmonie” State Orchestra of Koblenz.
